The first projection mapping on the cloister: the 2022 Open Day
Three years before the MusicMediale finale, the porticoed wing of the Nicolini’s cloister lit up for the Open Day: the façade surveyed, the drawing of the arches and windows, the tests on 8 June and the evening of the 19th.
On 19 June 2022, for the Nicolini Conservatory’s Open Day, the porticoed wing of the cloister became a screen. It was our first projection mapping on that façade, and the road that three years later led to the MusicMediale finale.
The façade, surveyed
It starts with the surface. We photographed the wing from above, straight on, and redrew its geometry: the arches of the portico, the pilasters, the cornices, the windows of the upper floor. The animations are built on that drawing, so that the light falls on the stone and not beside it.

The tests and the evening
On 8 June the tests on site, to line the projector up with the drawing; then the final version, the one for the evening. The arches fill with moving patterns, the windows light up one by one and inside them appear the Conservatory’s rooms and corridors, the musicians, the orchestra.

After
Since then projections have been one of our jobs for the Conservatory: designing them, preparing them, running them on the right night. In 2025 the same wing closed MusicMediale, with Ali Hosseini and Riccardo Dapelo.
