Digital AV Piacenza: the province inside a headset, in 2019

In 2019 Gianmarco was touring a 360° installation: basilicas, palaces, the Pietra Parcellara and the woods of the Val Trebbia to walk through with a headset. The local daily Libertà interviewed him. It is where the road to Oriental and The Four Turandot begins.

The page of Libertà of 19 June 2019 with the interview “With 3D headsets in the unique places of the city and province” and a photo of Gianmarco Romiti at Palazzo Farnese next to a person trying the headset.

In 2019, 360° footage had only just become good enough to live inside a headset without disappointing. Gianmarco, then a student of Music Applied to Images at the Nicolini Conservatory, turned it into an installation: Digital AV Piacenza.

You put the headset on and found yourself inside the places of the province: the basilicas, the monuments, the old palaces, and then outdoors, on top of the Pietra Parcellara or in the middle of a wood in the Val Trebbia. The installation had no permanent home: it travelled to exhibitions, festivals, events and schools.

“The real possibility of entering, with body and mind, unique places that many people have never visited.”

Gianmarco Romiti to Libertà, 19 June 2019

The rest of the work, already then

The same interview holds what would become the everyday work: the collaboration with the Nicolini’s multimedia lab, led by Marco Alpi, recording concerts and producing their DVDs, music videos for classical music, with the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan, the Primavera di Baggio and the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. It is the same work that goes on today in the Conservatory’s communication.

In the spring his photographs were among those of the thirty artists of “Skatta l’arte”, the exhibition for the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association at Palazzo Farnese, from 27 April to 5 May 2019. Libertà photographed him at Palazzo Farnese with the headset.

From here to Osaka

Six years later, the 360° footage is that of Oriental, at Expo 2025 Osaka, with sound that turns with your gaze. And the headset is the one you use to walk through the theatre of The Four Turandot.
